How to Set Start and End Dates for Budgets

Updated this week

Start and end dates define the active window in which a budget can be used.

This timeframe controls when transactions can be tagged to that budget and ensures your financial tracking stays accurate and structured.

Start Date

This is the first day the budget becomes active. Only transactions dated on or after the start date can be linked to the budget. You can set it to begin today, in the future, or even in the past (backdating).

End Date

This is the last valid day for spending under this budget. Once the end date passes, the budget will automatically be marked as expired. Users can no longer assign new transactions unless an admin extends the budget period.

Why This Matters

  • Prevents accidental misuse of expired budgets

  • Ensures only relevant transactions are included in reports

  • Makes it easy to align budgets with project timelines, fiscal quarters, or events
